Beef n Brew contest

T J's Antiques Gift & Sweet Shop, 608 Main Street, Red Bluff  was winner of the Judges Choice trophy awarded at the successful 1st Annual Beef 'N Brew. Judge Vic Woolery was reaching for a Chateaubriand with Portabella Mushrooms beef appetizer as chef Jack Lewis told about the different beef appetizers, Corned Beef on Endive, Whiskey BBQ Beef on Sourdough Bread, and Roast Beef with a hint of horseradish offered Saturday night.

The Celebrity Judges Bev Ross, Barbara McIver and  Woolery chose T J's Antiques as the winner of the beef appetizer competition.  Chef Jack Lewis said you need to use a good cut of beef, and he chose Chateaubriand, the most tender cut of beef, also known as a filet.  He and the judges were looking for a morsel (little bite), with a good taste. (The flavor of beef is enhanced by the Umami factor when paired with mushrooms, cheese, horseradish, tomato.)

A Chateaubriand (filet of beef) cut into cubes, sauted with garlic, green onion and Portabella mushroom.  When done, he "burned off" with burgundy wine.  Jack would prefer to serve this on a tender puff pastry, but time ran out, and he used crackers.

Barbara Cowley named Educator of the Year

American National CattleWomen, Inc. at their 2010 Summer Conference in Denver, Colorado recognized Barbara Cowley of Montague, California with their Outstanding Educator of the Year Award. Kathryn Malcolm-Callis, ANCW Consumer Education chairman mentioned the following list of accomplishments:

"Ag in the Classroom" and school room activities at state and local level for the past 17 years has been a specialty.  72,895 students have been visited in their classroom.  There have been 2,915 presentations given and many hours of work put into this effort.

The Cow Palace in San Francisco has been another destination for teaching about beef cattle, beef safety and beef nutrition.  When she stated teaching there were large crowds of school children coming to see and hear about the various animals.  CattleWomen arranged and took the children on tours of the whole facility and each group was taught about the importance of beef cattle.  As the years went by the groups became smaller due to school budget cuts, but the program has continued.  More than 11,963 students went through these tours.

Representing the CattleWomen, she has attended the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom conventions.  She has been a speaker demonstrating how to teach, use games and make learning fun while teaching about beef and the many aspects of the beef industry.  She also taught in the "make and take" sessions and workshops as well as having beef materials displayed for all to see.

The National Beef Ambassador Program is another pet project for Cowley, as she has worked on the county, state and national level.  She feels that working with these young ambassadors is refreshing and rewarding.
